As a personal project, photographer Ben Marra has spent many years documenting the contemporary Native American Powwow and the colorful regalia worn by tribal members. His book, POWWOW...Images Along the Red Road [Abrams], is available through this website.
Each summer, thousands of Native American people across the United States and Canada celebrate their connections to tradition and spirituality -- to the Earth and to one another -- in a social, personal and spiritual meeting: the Powwow. For many, these gatherings are an integral component of the Native American existence. Beyond an homage to a great ancestry, the Powwow is an event of contemporary significance for the individuals and communities making up today's Native American Nations. Marra's camera captures the authentic pride and spirituality of present-day Native Americans.
His work has been featured in numerous galleries, national magazines, and was recently included in the Handbook of North American Indians, published by the Smithsonian Institution. All images are photographed on location.
